PRO BONO CASE COORDINATOR (BERGEN COUNTY) 

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) seeks to fill the position of Case Coordinator (Bergen County) for its Pro Bono unit. This is a full-time position with the ability to work a hybrid schedule. NNJLS is a non-profit public interest law firm with over 140 staff providing free legal services to low-income and senior residents of Hudson, Bergen and Passaic Counties, New Jersey. NNJLS provides a wide variety of civil legal assistance and advocacy for those most in need of legal representation, such as victims of domestic violence, tenants facing unfair and arbitrary eviction, seniors victimized by unscrupulous creditors and clients facing many other types of legal matters. NNJLS is committed to the principle that all members of society should be treated equally and fairly by our civil justice system. Pro Bono is one part of the NNJLS organization and works directly with private volunteer attorneys to provide legal assistance to low-income residents in the NNJLS service area. Pro Bono also provides access to other legal services including advice sessions and clinics in a variety of legal topics.
The Pro Bono Case Coordinator will assist in the coordination of pro bono services through the client intake process and will strive to provide clients with timely legal services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and opening client files in Pro Bono utilizing Legal Server;

  • Ensuring correct funding and legal program codes in Legal Server;

  • Reviewing eligibility and obtaining waivers, as needed;

  • Obtaining signed documents from clients that are unique to Pro Bono;

  • Obtaining any relevant documentation and information from the client regarding their particular case needs;

  • Following-up with clients as necessary to obtain documents, case updates and status of the legal issues;

  • Ensuring compliance with both NNJLS and Pro Bono policies and procedures;

  • Identifying and classifying cases by type of legal services needed, including potential long-term representation, brief representation, advice sessions, or referral to a clinic or other program run through Pro Bono;

  • Working with the Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney to refer clients to volunteers, through both direct services and clinics, which includes, but is not limited to, creating client info packets that contain necessary information and documentation for each case type;

  • Assisting with clinics as needed;

  • Translating for volunteer attorneys and Pro Bono staff as needed; and

  • Closing cases, pursuant to NNJLS and Pro Bono policies and procedures.

The Pro Bono Case Coordinator will report to the Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney and will sit in the Bergen County office.


Minimum Requirements:

  • 1-3 years related administrative/supervisory experience in the legal field (preferred) or other professional office;

  • Exceptional ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task;

  • Professional demeanor and excellent verbal and written skills;

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office and other computer programs; and

  • Ability to speak Spanish required.

All staff receive an attractive salary and fringe benefits package. Starting salary range for this position is $37,500 to $40,500 commensurate with experience. Fringe benefits include comprehensive health/dental/life insurance, 10% employer contribution to a 401(a) retirement plan, and a voluntary 403(b) retirement plan. Paid time-off includes 2 weeks’ vacation to start, 15 sick days, 4 personal days, and 15 holidays. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

Responsibilities Include: 

  • Administer all aspects of the Human Resources department 

  • Work with staff to provide leadership, direction and experience in the areas of federal and state employment laws, implementation and customization of HR programs, products and services 

  • Provide support and guidance to managers and administrators in the areas of compensation, compliance, record-keeping and general HR related inquiries 

  • Help to ensure that leadership and employees are informed of HR policies and practices, NNJLS programs and proposed changes that will affect their employees and/or their operation's effectiveness 

  • Assist in the development, implementation and communication of company policies and procedures and establish and maintain favorable employee relations climate and relationships with employees at all levels and makes recommendations to assist in increasing company value, and employee motivation and productivity 

  • Partner with directors to determine recruitment strategies and proactively identify cost effective recruitment sources and programs and assists department managers with the recruitment, interviewing, and selection processes and conducts exit interviews as part of resignations and terminations 

  • Counsel facility managers on employee/labor relation issues through the consistent and equitable application of company policies and procedures and assist in the resolution of employee complaints, grievances, etc. 

  • Conducting investigations and make recommendations regarding disciplinary actions and the disposition of harassment and discrimination complaints 

  • Maintain and administer the benefits plans, disability, worker’s compensation, FMLA, and COBRA 

  • Lead NNJLS’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs and initiatives. 

  • Provide guidance in the search, selection and hiring practices to ensure adherence to and compliance with EEO, Affirmative Action, antidiscrimination and all relevant hiring laws and best practices to ensure a diverse pool of qualified candidates. 

  • Completion of other tasks as assigned 

 

Qualifications: At least 3 years of human resources management experience in a professional setting and a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources.  Other degrees not in HR will be considered. Experience in a unionized environment a plus.  The successful applicant will have excellent and versatile communication and writing skills, the ability to lead projects, work collaboratively, and possess strong organizational skills. 

 

Location: The position is based in our Jersey City office with travel to our Hackensack and Paterson offices required as necessary.

ASSISTANT MANAGING ATTORNEY, PUBLIC BENEFITS UNIT

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) seeks an Assistant Managing Attorney to supervise its Public Benefits Unit. The Public Benefits Unit handles unemployment, welfare, SNAP, Medicaid, and SSI matters. The position will be located in our Paterson, NJ office and is full-time with the ability to work a hybrid schedule after 90 days. 

 

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services’ mission is to ensure equal access to justice for low-income residents of Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic Counties, New Jersey. In order to accomplish this mission, NNJLS provides a full array of free legal services in civil matters, including legal representation, advocacy, advice, community legal education, and other legal services.

Position Description:  The Assistant Managing Attorney, along with the Managing Attorney, will supervise the work of all unit casehandlers including paralegals. Supervision includes but is not limited to, designing and implementing unit priorities and case handling protocols, providing training to new attorneys, overseeing the overall performance and day-to-day activities of the unit, and working alongside other managers to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of services. The Assistant Managing Attorney will also carry a limited caseload and participate in community education and outreach. Some travel between offices is required. 

Position Qualifications:  The Assistant Managing Attorney must be admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey and have at least three years of Public Benefits Law practice experience.  Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills are also required. Prior Legal Services experience or a demonstrated commitment to legal assistance for the disadvantaged is preferred. Prior supervisory experience is a plus. PARALEGAL, HOUSING LAW UNIT

Northeast New Jersey Legal Services (NNJLS) seeks to hire a Housing Law Paralegal for its Jersey City, New Jersey office. This is a full-time position with the ability to work a hybrid schedule. The office is within easy commuting distance from NYC and Northern New Jersey via public transportation. The paralegal will work closely with housing managers, staff attorneys, and support staff, and must be detail-oriented, able to work independently to interview clients, gather information, prepare and file documents, and maintain client files. The paralegal will also assist with outreach and CLE events as needed. The successful candidate will be well organized and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously. The position requires proficiency in MS Word, MS Outlook, MS Excel, and Adobe Acrobat, as well as an ability to learn other programs. Experience with new media technologies a plus. Bilingual skills are also a plus.
